| 5-Axis Machining Centre can handle 6-tonne moulding tools May 07, 2006 | Following its corporate strategy of focusing on cutting-edge high-speed machining (HSM) technology, the machine tool manufacturer Huron Graffenstaden SAS has recently introduced the KX 50 5-axis machining centre for the processing of medium-size workpieces weighing as much as 6 tonnes.
This efficient, high-performance production unit is designed for five-face machining of such materials as steel, aluminium, and cast iron, including both roughing and finishing work. Applications for its use include the machining of plastics moulds, metal-casting dies, cutting tools, and drawing tools.
The KX 50 is equipped with a dual-rotary-axis head, a 30-tool magazine, and an 18,000-rpm, 20-kW HSK-63 spindle. B-axis travel is ±95°, and the c-axis moves ±190°.
The machine comes in two models. The 50 M has a worktable with an effective area of 2,200 x 1,000 mm and a load capacity of 4,000 kg, while the 50 L accommodates 6,000 kg on a 3,000 x 1,000-mm table. X-y-z travel is 2,000 x 1,700 x 800 mm in the former and 3,000 x 1,700 x 800 mm in the latter. Programmable linear speed can reach 40 m/min. Maximum acceleration is 7 m/sec˛.
The machine dynamics are maximized by a rigid structure and highly dynamic movement. The powerful spindle can be expected to provide effective swarf removal during roughing, very high surface quality in finishing, and very good contouring accuracy. Its direct-drive universal head achieves high rotational speeds and very accurate positioning.
The range of accessories available for the machine enhances its performance capabilities and helps users hit cost targets for maximum competitiveness.
