How does water jet cutting work?

A water jet cutting machine tool is capable of slicing a material using a jet of water at very high velocity and pressure. The process works on the principle of water erosion as found within nature, when water flows over a solid material it erodes it and carries displaced particles away.

The technology works by compressing water and focusing it into a concentrated point, creating an ultra high pressure jet. This jet is capable of eroding almost any material it comes in contact with. The force of erosion can then be amplified further with the addition of an abrasive material mixed within the water, enhancing the cutting process.

How do water jet cutting machines work?

There are two types of water jet cutting machines, abrasive types and non-abrasive types.

Non-Abrasive water jet cutting machines cut with pure water and consist of the flowing parts.

The cutter is connected to a high-pressure water pump, where the water is then ejected out of the nozzle (at 4000/6000 bar), cutting through the material by bombarding it with the stream of high-speed water.

Abrasive water Jet cutting machines work on the same principle but with the addition of an additive dosing system, supplying the water with a constant/regulated supply of abrasive material. This abrasive material is in the form of garnet and aluminum oxide.

With the addition of abrasive media the machines can cut to a greater thickness and a wider range of materials.

What are the benefits of water jet cutting over conventional machining?

There are numerous advantages with using water jet cutting for your manufacturing process. These include:

  • No heat effected zone on cut part - Therefore after machining the material has little change with its intrinsic material properties.

  • Eco-friendly - The use of water makes waste material removal easy and effective. Creating a cleaner working environment.

  • Capable of producing intricate cuts - Cutting accuracies of 0.015mm can be attained.

  • No cutting forces transferred from work piece through machine - As forces cannot be transmitted back into the machine head the accuracy of machine becomes more consistent throughout lifetime.

  • Wide range of applications - Materials that can be cut range from foam to titanium.

  • Multiple head capability - Ideal for batch production

  • Large designs can be cut - Machine bed can be up to 50m long
